The balafon is a traditional African musical instrument with a deeply rooted history. It consists of wooden bars mounted on a wooden frame and is typically played with mallets. A distinctive feature of the balafon is its tuning to the traditionally African pentatonic scale, which corresponds to A minor in Western music. The instrument has 10 notes arranged in a specific sequence to create harmonious melodies. Originally from Ghana, the balafon has gained worldwide recognition and has become a symbol of African music traditions. It is frequently used at festive occasions, ceremonies, and cultural events. With dimensions of approximately 70 cm in length, 45 cm in width, and 40 cm in height, the balafon is traditionally made from Mansonia wood, which is valued for its excellent resonance and durability. The hollowed gourds serve as resonators, amplifying the characteristic sound of the instrument.
